In September 2008, as economic markets collapsed throughout Europe and the United States, sales for contemporary art hit unprecedented heights, with works by Damien Hirst selling at auction for more than £111 million in two days at Sotheby’s. The market for contemporary art seemed entirely unaffected by this economic disaster. How could this discrepancy exist? In 2008, art critic and filmmaker Ben Lewis spent a year investigating the contemporary art markets in London, New York and China, to create a film that reveals the volatility and power of the art market.
