The Absence of John Knight’s Journal Series
Jon Knowles and Vincent Bonin re-examine two conceptual artworks from the 1970s, Magazine Piece (1970–) by Vancouver-based artist Ian Wallace and Journal Series (1977–) by Los Angeles artist John Knight. Although both works are separated in time by a hiatus that corresponds to the postmodern turn, they make use of similar strategies. The texts address the works’ latest instantiation in the window of an abandoned shop on Saint-Laurent Boulevard that was rented for the occasion (May 2010). The authors also analyze how these two works function critically within a larger economical context. The issue is available free of charge during the exhibition.

13 Conversations About Art and Cultural Race Politics
13 Conversations about Art and Cultural Race Politics brings together a variety of recent texts by artists, critics and curators on ethnicity and racialized difference, as manifested in the contemporary visual and media arts. A principal touchstone for this book is the celebratory explosion and proliferation of work by artists of colour and First Nations artists in Canada during the 1980s and 1990s in the visual arts, film and video.
These Conversations attempt to illuminate the complexity of the evolution of cultural race politics over the last two decades, engaging its history and formative concepts and by speculating on its future. Several underlying questions remain : what does it mean to continue thinking critically about race in relation to artistic practice and other cultural processes? What has created the situation wherein a recent history of cultural race politics seems to have withered? What is the impact of accelerated globalization and so-called “global culture” on our considerations of culture, race and difference? The authors question “cultural appropriation” and authenticity of cultural forms, so critical and widely debated a decade ago, and question what these concepts continue to mean within “global” cultural contexts, where notions of cultural hybridity, syncretism and fusion are now the order of the day.

L’art qui nous est contemporain
For many years now, in North America and in Europe, contemporary art has been the source of much heated debate, whether questioning its legitimacy, its intelligibility or simply asking “why make it?” in the context of a society driven by economics and information. To date, most of the thinking concerns basic questions such as: What is it for? Who is it for? What does it mean? What makes it possible?

Studiolo : The Collaborative Work of Martha Fleming and Lyne Lapointe
This bookwork provides detailed documentation of Fleming and Lapointe‚s collaborative site works created for abandoned buildings in Montréal and New York City. It contains a docu-fiction by Fleming, and transcribed conversations between the artists and Montréal-based critic and curator Lesley Johnstone. Electronic art is a paradoxical practice, employing a panoply of aesthetic stategies to simultaneously imitate and subvert the surface logic of contemporary images. Bill Vazan : Ghostings : Premiers projets et dessins.
In this publication, Bill Vazan presents “idea impulses” as a major aspect of his work and reflects on the artist’s tools. Through retrospective texts, Burnett and Landry consider the artist’s drawings in relation to the rest of his work, stressing their specific function and status.
